LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND -- Before heavyweight Joe Mesi's bout against Shannon Miller, critics claimed they needed further ring corroboration to respect the legitimacy of Mesi's comeback. After Friday night’s contest, these critics will have no choice but to acknowledge the fact that Mesi is officially back.

Mesi (36-0, 29 KO's), of Buffalo, NY, blitzed Troy, New York native Shannon Miller (15-4, 9 KO's) at the Twin River Event Center with the official result a TKO at 2:51 of the first round.

"I felt good tonight," said Mesi. "I felt the most like the old Joe Mesi since my comeback."

Using his left jab to set up his crisp right hand, Mesi nailed Miller with several power punches in the first minute of the opening round. A big right hand sent Miller reeling, and Mesi followed up the punch with several robust combinations that put Miller to the floor. Once the latter rose, Mesi continued his onslaught, throwing strong left hooks and sharp right hands. A monstrous right cross that floored Miller ended the bout.

"My right hand is my strongest weapon," said Mesi. "We worked a lot on the left in training, but I ended up falling back on the right."

"Miller's best quality is his courage [so] I didn't expect the fight to end in the first round," added Mesi. "No one has done that to him."

Mesi cited Hasim Rahman, Brian Minto, and Roman Greenburg as potential future opponents.
