Clay Bey Awarded Thin Decision over Shufford

Lawrence Clay Bey improved to 18-1 (13 KO's) after being awarded a unanimous decision victory over Charles Shufford in the ten round heavyweight main event of ESPN2's Friday Night Fights airing live from Norman, Oklahoma. Clay Bey controlled the action early on in a contest that saw him eventually out work Shufford in a very close fight. With the loss Shufford's record now stands at 19-3 (9).

Clay Bey breezed through the first three frames, easily outworking Shufford as he scored with well placed right hooks and uppercuts. Shufford, fighting out of Las Vegas seemed intent on getting a long look at his Hartford, Connecticut based opponent before mounting an assault. The decision prompted Shufford's father/trainer to give his son a verbal tongue lashing in between rounds three and four. It worked.

Over the course of the next three frames Shufford scored with several well-placed shots of his own, scoring frequently with left hands around the guard of Clay Bey. Rounds five and six being the only two frames up to this point where Shufford out landed the American Olympic representative of the 2000 games.

In rounds seven and eight Clay Bey resumed control of the contest, snapping the jab out in multiples of two and three and following through with straight right hands, stunning Shufford with a compact right hand to the chin at the midway point of round seven.

Rounds nine and ten would see both combatants having their moments in spots. Shufford continued to have success with the left hand around the guard of Clay Bey whom later took the initiative early in round ten, backing Shufford into a corner and scoring with hooks and uppercuts.

Scores and Punchstat numbers:

Clay Bey landed 123 of 639 attempts, connecting at 19 percent. Shufford was good on 118 of 429, landing at a 27 percent clip. Clay Bey was awarded the contest on cards reading 96-94 and 97-93 twice. MaxBoxing had it 96-95 for Clay Bey.



Pastrana Stops Primero in Eight

Mauricio "El Pintoso" Pastrana improved to 29-3-1 (19) after stopping Evaristo Primero in the eighth round of a scheduled 12 round contest for the IBA regional super flyweight title. Primero, fighting out of Juarez, Mexico put up a game effort against Pastrana for most of the contest before being outclassed by the former International Boxing Federation's world champion of two weight classes. With the loss Primero's record now stands at 14-6 (7).

Action through the first three frames saw both fighters throwing and landing a nearly equal number of punches. Primero, keeping Pastrana on the outside scored with hooking shots and uppercuts in the first round, Pastrana stunning his foe with two hard right hands in the second.

Round four would see Primero stunned for the second time in the contest as midway into the frame Pastrana scored with a hard right uppercut followed by a left cross. Primero responding well as he backed Pastrana up for most of the second half of the frame. Punchstat numbers were virtually identical after five competitive rounds were complete.

Pastrana shortened up his punches in the sixth frame and scored more frequently with combinations from close range. Round seven would see Pastrana pull away on the scorecards of an otherwise very close contest.

Pastrana scored the only knockdown of the contest early in the seventh frame as he caught Primero with a devastating left-hand uppercut to the chin. Seconds later Primero was docked a point by referee Bill Marshall for excessive holding. Primero continued to absorb punishment throughout the round as Pastrana continued to press the action.

Round eight of the contest picked up right where the previous frame had left off and it wasn't long before Primero found himself on the wrong side of a Pastrana two handed hooking assault that eventually knocked his mouthpiece out.

The game warrior returned to his corner to have his mouthpiece put back in however Primero's corner stepped in and did the right thing by putting a halt to the contest at 1:48 of the eighth round.

At the time of the stoppage MaxBoxing had the contest scored 68-64 for Pastrana.


Also:

Featherweight action saw Bernard Dunne improve to 3-0 all by way of knockout after stopping Simon Ramirez in the first frame of a scheduled four round contest. With the loss Ramirez's record now stands at 2-2-1.

Jr. Middleweight action saw Paul Williams up his unbeaten mark to 19-0 (15) after stopping Earl Jackson in the second round of a scheduled six round contest. With the loss Jackson's record now stands at 11-15-2 (8).
