Narvaez defends title in a snoozer

TRELEW (Chubut, Argentina) - WBO flyweight king Omar Narváez (12-0-2, 7 KO) notched an unimpressive 10th round DQ victory over well traveled veteran Luis Lazarte (20-6-1, 8 KO) in his first defense of the title that he took from Adonis Rivas in mid July. Fighting in his native town for a partisan crowd and an insignificant purse, Narvaez kept coming forward against the game but outgunned national minimum weight champion, who made the two division jump in hopes of making the last few large bills of his career. The champ was unable to deal with Lazarte's awkward tactics, but seemed in control of the fight until a clearly intentional head charge by the challenger found his way into his left eyebrow and opened a nasty gash. The referee stopped the lackluster event and declared Narvaez the winner by disqualification. In a thrilling prelim, light heavyweight Olympian Hugo Garay (11-0-0, 5 KO) was awarded a unanimous decision against Hugo Rodríguez (4-2-1, 2 KO).
