NEW YORK CITY (March 8th) – Today marks the 35th anniversary of the most important date in sports history. It was this day in 1971 on which Smokin’ Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali in what is simply known as ‘The Fight of the Century’ at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

When the bell tolled, the world came to a halt. The fight was one of the biggest social and political events of the 20th century. 300,000,000 people witnessed the fight throughout the world. Such a night there had never been seen in the history of sports. For here came two of the greatest fighters ever, both young and strong and in their primes, both to be paid $2.5 million (a sum so astonishing it landed the fighters on the cover of Time magazine), both certain they would leave the ring as they entered it, champion now and forever. It was Frazier who emerged victorious, knocking Ali down en route to winning the decision after fifteen of the most grueling rounds ever known to mankind.

Smokin’ Joe Frazier, now 62, will celebrate this special 35th anniversary in New York City where his finest hour took place. The Guest House, an upscale chic-lounge will turn into a party joint as Smokin’ Joe and his many celebrity friends reminisce about the fight. Frazier will also announce a new project to celebrate the fight.

Frazier has selected multi-award winning artist Richard T. Slone to create a painting of the ‘Fight of the Century’ and will announce at tonight’s celebration the limited edition art series to be unveiled later this year. Slone has emerged as one the most sought after young artists in the world and in a unique twist used to box under the guidance of Frazier. More information about the series can be found at www.sloneart.com
