WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito made an April superfight with interim champ Kermit Cintron a reality tonight at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey by stopping game Sebastian Lujan in the tenth round of their scheduled ten rounder.
The end came at 2:57 of the tenth, when Lujan’s corner threw in the towel after a freak injury left the Argentinean with a grotesquely cut left ear.
After a slow start, Margarito picked up the pace, and round by round he took Lujan apart with a frantic work rate and a sustained attack to the head and body.
With the win, Margarito improves to 31-4 with 22 KOs. Lujan falls to 22-2-1 with 14 KOs.
Margarito and Cintron are expected to clash on ESPN Pay-Per-View on April 24 in Las Vegas.
Said the unbeaten Cintron, “He fought good. Now it’s my turn.”
In the ESPN co-feature, welterweights Joshua Clottey (27-1, 20 KOs) and Stephen Martinez (46-5-1, 28 KOs) saw their bout end prematurely when a clash of heads produced a cut over the left eye of Martinez that forced a halt to the bout in the second round, with the official ruling being a no-contest.
